Uralkali Publishes 2020 ESG Report


Uralkali (the Company), one of the world’s leading potash producers, today announces the publication of its 2020 ESG Report, ‘Resilience and Progress’. The full report is available at the link.

The ESG Report provides an overview of Uralkali’s ESG Strategy to 2025, its progress towards the achievement of its sustainability goals in 2020, and the Company’s comprehensive response to COVID-19. The Report was prepared in line with GRI and SASB Reporting standards, and has been assured by an independent third party.

Report highlights:

ESG Strategy to 2025

In 2020, the Company’s ESG Strategy for the next five years was developed and approved by the Board of Directors. The Strategy defines the Company’s ten key priority areas for sustainable development, seven of which are fundamental areas which the Company has been prioritizing for many years, including human rights, the environment, and corporate governance, and three of which are new, namely climate change, sustainable agriculture and achieving a responsible supply chain.

Progress towards ESG Strategy to 2025 in 2020

  • Significant improvement in Health and Safety performance, with LTIFR reduced to 0.07, and zero fatalities recorded
  • Greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) amounted to 1.7 million tonnes of CO2-eq., a 5% decrease over the past three years
  • Total volume of wastewater disposal decreased by 7% y-o-y to 15.5 million m3
  • Total reduction of 203,500 GJ in energy consumed as a result of energy saving initiatives
  • RUB 980 million invested in social projects

Progress in three new key priority areas

Climate Change

  • CDP climate change rating upgraded to D (an improvement compared to F in 2019).
  • Establishment of a cross-functional Working Group on the Development and Implementation of a Carbon Management System
  • Training activities organized for personnel on climate change and GHG emissions management

Sustainable Agriculture

  • The International Fertilizer Association (IFA) awarded Uralkali with a gold medal for its responsible approach to production
  • Successful compliance with the IFA Protect & Sustain Standard which requires best practice in quality management systems, workplace safety and environmental management

Responsible Supply Chain

  • Approval of a corporate Procurement Policy, which defines the Company’s commitment to cooperating with companies that share its sustainable development values
  • Initiation of plans to develop and adopt a Supplier Code of Conduct, which will define the ethical, environmental and social requirements for Uralkali’s suppliers.
